The Results of
Infection With Herpes
Recurrent ulcerations of the skin and genitalia, due
to reactivation of latent herpes simplex viruses residing
in the nervous system, are often physically and
emotionally crippling.
Eye infections, which may lead to blindness, are
responsible for 5% of patient visits to ophthalmology
clinics.
HSV-2 infections cause serious and sometimes fatal
conditions such as meningitis, encephalitis,
miscarriages, fetal deaths, birth defects and other
hard-to-treat infections of the newborn.
HSV-2 causes neoplastic transformation in cultured cells and induces
severe hyperproliferative lesions in some patients.
The risk of infection with HIV (human immuno
deficiency virus)---the cause of AIDS--- is increased in
patients with chronic genital herpes simplex virus
infections.
